“The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you.
In between, the leader is a servant.”
OUR CONGRATULATIONS AND SPECIAL BLESSINGS TO THESE OFFICERS
PRESIDENT: KATHY HERFEL
I am a lifelong Catholic originally from the Madison area. I am married to Tom; we have a daughter and a son, and 4 grandchildren. We are caregivers for my husband's mother who lives with us. Our home is in southern Eau Claire, rural County, Mondovi (Durand Deanery), where we are members of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. My life is very full with family and friends, and includes working part-time for almost 30 years at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire.
I have served as president and held other offices of the St. Olaf's PCCW in Eau Claire and Sacred Heart PCCW, Mondovi, have been president of the Durand Deanery, am secretary for the Province of Milwaukee, served on the Pastoral Council for our Tri-Parishes of Mondovi, Durand and Lima, and am in the choir at Sacred Heart Church.
I'm a long-time member of the Genealogical Research Society of Eau Claire, sing with the Threshold Singers of Eau Claire at bedsides of people at some threshold in their lives, am a member of the Mondovi Community Choir, and am on the program committee for Senior American's Day held annually at UW-Eau Claire. These are all important parts of my life, but Church and levels of Council have always been near and dear to my heart.
I look forward to working will the wonderful ladies in the Diocese of La Crosse over the next 2 years. Thank you!

PRESIDENT-ELECT: LORRAINE RIEDL
When I began attending Parish Council of Catholic Women meetings and events, it was by personal invitation by a kind person in my new parish. I loved learning and building of our faith and I loved the beautiful people I met. I was invited to attend a deanery gathering and before I knew it, I said yes to Deanery President, then Parish Co-President. Personal invitation and my subsequent “yes” brought me to Spirituality Commission and Service Commission for the Diocesan Council. Am I nervous about this next position? You bet! But I know that I am never alone in Councils of Catholic Women; we are on the journey together!
I have completed the Catholic Relief Services Fair Trade Ambassador program and would love to foster this long term relationship between the National Council of Catholic Women and Catholic Relief Services. I have completed the Diocesan Lay Formation Institute and Leader of Prayer and truly would love to foster building cooperation between the Diocese curia and the Council of Catholic Women. I have experience with the Department of Transportation, which has taught me responsibility of tax payer’s money and trust. This relates to the Council to be a good steward of the donations and their trust the funds will be used in a responsible manner. I am a mother of 3 adult children and the wife of a faithful deacon, and am truly blessed.

VICE PRESIDENT: MELANIE FREI
Melanie is a member of the newly merged Queen of the Apostles Parish in Tomah, Wisconsin. She and her husband, Tom, have three adult children and three grandchildren. Melanie talks about being in her “third life.” In life number one, Melanie served as a Protestant missionary in Guatemala and

Leaving the mission field to enter the Catholic Church, life number two was raising her family in La Crosse and continuing to serve God with Bible studies, music, as Director of Youth Ministry and then as a parish secretary. Now in life number three, Tom and Melanie are empty nesters in Tomah (with their mothers nearby) serving in religious education, prison ministry and music, with this spring completing her term as the LDCCW Spirituality Commission. For work, Melanie is a substitute teacher and operates an airbnb in her home. She is also involved with Area Community Theater, Wisconsin Right to Life, watching movies with Tom, and reading Georgette Heyer books. Retirement will be life number four—what could it bring?
